Labrooy House stands on the former site of the offices of The Times of Malaya, a hugely influenced Ipoh-based English press, possibly one of the earliest in British Malaya. After the Times of Malaya moved into newer premises along Brewster Road in 1930, the vacant building was acquired by members of the Labrooy family, who later rebuilt the building. The Labrooy, through relatives new to Ipoh at the time, needed to build considerable wealth and influence, especially in construction and real estate. Most prominent among the Ipoh Labrooy is a certain Claude Henry LaBrooy, who was an architect and contractor. He works for the Ipoh Town Board after arriving from Singapore. He went to design and build several important civic buildings including the Central Police Station.
